LAND O’ LAKES- One of Pasco County’s top prep softball coaches has decided it is time to step away from the high school sports scene.
Nelson Garcia announced two weeks ago that he would be stepping down as Sunlake’s varsity softball coach. The Seahawks were returning one of the top teams in the county and went ahead to reach the region finals last year before losing 6-4 to Fort Myers. Sunlake went 24-3 in 2019.
With Garcia stepping away, Sunlake now must take a look at the future with whom may take over as the school’s next softball coach. Garcia compiled an overall record of 129-67 through eight seasons at Sunlake. Garcia succeeded Jami Finan after the 2011 season and served as the boss from 2012-2019.
“Due to health issues, I am unable to meet my duties and my high expectations as a coach,” Garcia said in a statement to The Suncoast News. “After much contemplation, I felt it was best for everyone to resign and focus on my health.”
“I have been very fortunate to be given the fantastic opportunities to grow and make lifelong friends during my time at Sunlake. It's been an honor to represent such a great institution and staff.”
