Know your opponent: Orlando Edgewater (6-2)

High school football hasn’t gone into December for a Pasco County team since 2011. That’s when the Pasco Pirates made a run all the way to the state semifinals before being upended 41-38 in triple overtime to Wakulla Crawfordville.

Now, these Mitchell Mustangs have carried themselves into the elite level of prep football that not many Pasco County teams can ever say they’ve been to and that’s the region final round. Only Pasco (1983, 1992, 2008, 2011), Land O’ Lakes (2002, 2003), Hudson (2005) and River Ridge (2016) are the only others to go this deep into the playoffs.

Mitchell (11-0) faces one of the most elite teams in the state of Florida when it will travel back to the Orlando area to face Orlando Edgewater (6-2), whom just defeated Viera 59-0 in its region semifinal game. Edgewater played in the Class 7A state championship last year and lost to St. Thomas Aquinas. If Mitchell has any aspirations to go that far, the road goes through the Eagles. We give you a bit of insight in getting to know Edgewater.

Edgewater Eagles (6-2)

Losses: 48-7 to IMG Academy; 31-13 to Orlando Jones

Last week: Region semifinal win 59-0 over Viera

Key players: QB Canaan Mobley, WR Christian Leary, ATH Tommi Hill, DT Zatrell Garrett, RB Cedric Baxter, DE Diante Shepard, LB Deshawn Troutman

Skinny: This Edgewater team is full of talent from top to bottom and don’t let the two losses fool you. This Eagles team can play with anyone in the state when fully healthy. Bad thing for Mitchell is Edgewater looks fully loaded heading into the region final meeting, and that’s a scary thought. Christian Leary, an Alabama commitment, is one of the state’s most dangerous wide receivers and the Mustangs’ haven’t seen a player like him all season long. Dual-threat quarterback Canaan Mobley, who has offers from Alabama A&M and Long Island, can do it through the air and on the ground. Mobley threw for 203 yards and rushed for another 59 in Friday’s win over Viera. From 6-foot-3 defensive end Diante Shepard to linebacker Deshawn Troutman (University of Miami commitment), the Eagles are loaded on defense as well. From also having to game plan for other playmakers like athlete Tommi Hill (Arizona State commitment) and running back Cedric Baxter, who has already committed to Florida State, this will be the most talented team Mitchell has faced in program history.
