Suncoast law enforcement agencies will help residents properly dispose of expired, unused and prescription drugs on Saturday.
It’s part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., sites in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, Polk and other counties will accept unneeded medications that might otherwise be susceptible to misuse or abuse.
Liquids and hypodermic needles and other biohazards will not be accepted.
Prescription drug abuse kills seven Floridians a day, according to authorities. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets. According to authorities, drugs languishing in home cabinets also can lead to accidental poisonings.
In addition, usual methods of disposal – flushing down a toilet or throwing in the trash – pose potential safety, health and environmental hazards, officials said.
“Providing a disposal option that is both convenient and environmentally responsible may help keep prescriptions out of the hands of people for whom they were not intended,” Clearwater Police Chief Anthony Holloway said in a news release. “This service is one step in helping prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands.”
Drop-off locations are in parking lots and not inside buildings or businesses.
