Baseball: Tarpon pulls off upset

HUDSON — Tarpon Springs entered Monday night’s Class 5A District 8 quarterfinal against Fivay playing some of its best baseball of the season.
But as the tournament’s No. 7 seed and owners of a 6-17 overall record, the Spongers needed to put it all together if they wanted to survive on the road against the No. 2 Falcons.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Tarpon Springs is moving on to the semifinals after an unlikely 5-0 win Monday night.
The Spongers are now one win away from a playoff berth. They advance to Wednesday’s semifinal against the winner of Tuesday night’s quarterfinal between No. 3 Sunlake and No. 6 Anclote.
Tarpon Springs split its season series with Anclote but was swept by Sunlake (2-1 and 8-6).
Tuesday’s early quarterfinal is between No. 4 Land O’ Lakes and No. 5 Dunedin. The winner of that game will play No. 1 River Ridge in a Wednesday night semifinal at 7:30.
All games are hosted by Fivay High and the championship is scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Class 7A District 9 at Countryside High
Tuesday’s quarterfinal games match up No. 4 Countryside and No. 5 Seminole at 5 p.m. and No. 3 Pinellas Park and No. 6 Clearwater at 8 p.m.
The Countryside-Seminole winner moves on to play No. 1 Northeast on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Pinellas Park or Clearwater will get No. 2 East Lake at 8 p.m.
The league final will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
Class 8A District 8 - Satellite sites
No. 4 Palm Harbor University takes on No. 1 St. Petersburg at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in one of two District 8A-8 semifinals.
The four-team league may benefit a PHU team that is capable of winning games but inconsistent and not terribly deep.
No. 2 Bradenton Manatee hosts No. 3 Sarasota Riverview in the other semifinal.
Those winners will meet for the championship Thursday.
