Spring football practices in the state of Florida will begin to wrap up this week and Pasco County features all of its programs playing a spring game to finish out heading into the summer. We take a look at each of the 10 games on tap and what to watch for.
Wiregrass Ranch at East Lake: The best game on tap of all the Pasco County contests going on takes place between Wiregrass Ranch and East Lake. The Bulls have been one of the top teams in Pasco while East Lake has been the model of consistency in Pinellas County. Mark Kantor versus Bob Hudson. What more could you ask for?
Berkeley Prep at River Ridge: The second best game on the docket comes between the always talented Berkeley Prep Buccaneers and the River Ridge Royal Knights. River Ridge has gone outside of the area the last few games when it comes to spring and preseason contests. In 2018, they faced off against Bushnell South Sumter, an out of area opponent. Travis Hawks will likely get the nod under center for River Ridge.
Zephyrhills Christian Academy at Fivay: The Warriors are a team on the rise, while the Falcons are looking to somehow replace the rushing efforts of Jayvon Wilson in the backfield. Watch the play of ZCA lineman Malik Jones, who has received lots of college interest this spring.
Clermont East Ridge at Zephyrhills: One of the more interesting games on tap this spring is between the Class 5A, District 8, Champion Zephyrhills Bulldogs against the always tough Clermont East Ridge Knights. The Knights had an off year in 2018 and finished 3-7. Bulldogs look to find a signal caller to emerge.
Anclote at Sunlake: This contest features two of the three new head coaches in Pasco County, Jason Messamore at Anclote and Trey Burdick at Sunlake, making their debuts. Both teams have plenty of talent to spare in this contest that has rebuilding clubs.
Cypress Creek at Pasco: Jason Stokes makes his debut as head coach at Pasco against the second-year Cypress Creek Coyotes. The former Gaither Cowboys head man looks to get the Pirates moving in the right direction against a Coyotes team that defeated them during the regular season in 2018.
Land O’ Lakes at Wesley Chapel: This should be an evenly matched contest between Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel. Despite the Gators having to replace Kyle Livas in the backfield, they do return gunslinger Ethan Forrester’s 1,429 passing yards back at quarterback.
Mitchell at Hudson: The Mustangs are coming off another district championship season but face off against a feisty Hudson group in its spring game. Question will be, can the Cobras keep Tyler Williams in check?
Seminole at Gulf: Gulf is looking to take baby steps in the right direction and facing the Warhawks might help that cause. Seminole, though, had its good moments last season despite finishing with a record of 1-9.
Bishop McLaughlin at Carrollwood Day: Can the Hurricanes pick up where they left off from the 2018 season? Bishop McLaughlin enjoyed going 4-6 last year but didn’t produce good results last spring facing Carrollwood Day. Will things change this time around?
