TAMPA – Relentless pressure applied by Alivia Gonzalez and Mary Raymond and a midfield that controlled the game led to a shortened, 8-0 victory for Palm Harbor University at Alonso Tuesday night.

PHU’s senior scoring tandem split the first half’s six goals, with Raymond beginning the surge in the fourth minute.

“When it comes to district games you always want to try to make statements because you’re measured by how you play against these opponents,” second-year Hurricanes coach Randy Irick said. “The last thing we want to do is give any team confidence. We want to come in there with our confidence, keep elevating our game and make sure other teams can’t elevate to the best of their abilities.”

Tuesday’s win improves PHU to 6-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in Class 5A District 7 competition. Alonso falls to 5-4-0 and 0-3-0.

The Hurricanes dropped the hammer following the first-half water break. Already leading 3-0, Gonzalez scored her second and third goals within a minute of each other and Raymond made it 6-0 about three minutes later.

Sophomore Cami Boyette closed out the game with two scores in the first five minutes of the second half. Irick stated the goals are the first of Boyette’s varsity career.

Speaking of milestones, Gonzalez finds herself closer to setting PHU’s career record for goals scored, currently held by 2010 graduate Catherine Brinkman. The senior striker is two goals off the mark after Tuesday’s hat trick.

The Hurricanes get another District 5A-7 Friday night at Plant High (9-1-0, 2-1-0).

Alonso stays in league play Friday, as well, heading to Wharton (1-5-0, 0-2-0).
