Preseason prep football games start up this week around the state of Florida and we start to take a closer look at teams around Pasco County. The fourth team we take a look at is Zephyrhills High School, which is coming off a 10-1 campaign under coach Nick Carroll. The Bulldogs head into the 2019 campaign with high expectations coming off an undefeated regular season last year. Slated to start at quarterback for the Bulldogs is Nick Novo and he will have plenty of skill players around him. We take a closer look at Zephyrhills in our “Around the county” previews leading into prep football season.
Head coach: Nick Carroll
Last year’s record: 10-1
Key Players: Nick Novo (Jr., QB), Demetris Wright (Sr., DL), Tre Gallimore (Jr., RB), Zyre Roundtree (Jr., ATH), Chris Weeks (Sr., OL), AJ Mathis (Sr., DL), Ja’Bari Mention (Jr., TE/DL), John Melosky (So., OL), Elijah Lyons (Jr., LB).
Preview: Despite losing a slew of key athletes from the successful 2018 squad, Zephyrhills will most certainly have the talent once again to make another deep run in Class 5A and the district provides a nice road to potentially another district championship. Zephyrhills is coming off of one of the school’s best seasons in history, with the Bulldogs reaching the region semifinals of the Class 5A postseason before falling 40-21 against Citra North Marion. Zephyrhills’ head coach Nick Carroll will have to replace his starting quarterback from last season and 6-foot-3 signal caller Nick Novo will step into the saddle. Novo was impressive in the team’s spring game against Clermont East Ridge. An impactful player on the Bulldogs will be lineman Demetris Wright, who is receiving interested from Division I schools. Wright will see time on both the defensive and offensive lines for Zephyrhills.
