THIS WEEK’S FEATS:
Burburija defended his Class 3A 195-pound state championship in dominant fashion last weekend in Kissimmee. The senior mowed down his competition, scoring pins in all four matches. He dropped Miami Columbus senior Carmine Dascoli in the first round to secure gold.
Burburija ran the table again this season by capturing conference, district, region and state titles. After going 52-1 last season, he was a perfect 55-0 this year.
Countryside turned in the best team performance of any Pinellas County program with competitors at states. The Cougars’ other two qualifiers earned silver medals: Steven Nguyen (106 pounds) and Steve Chopek (126). The county’s other state champ was Admiral Farragut’s Caleb Lemmons, who won the Class 1A title at 132 pounds.
