Prep football games start up a month around the state of Florida and we start to take a closer look at teams around Pasco County. The first team we take a look at is Anclote High School, which is coming off a 2-8 campaign under former coach Matt Kingsley.
The Sharks head into the 2019 campaign looking to inch a little closer to the .500 mark, as the program has been down the last couple of seasons. Anclote hires former Gulf coach Jason Messamore to run the program in place of Kingsley. We take a closer look at Anclote in our “Around the County” previews leading into prep football season.
Head coach: Jason Messamore
Last year’s record: 2-8
Key Players: Breon Jackson (Sr., DL), Daionta Reynolds (Jr., ATH), Chris Rahm (Sr., OL), Thomas Crawford (Jr., ATH), Michael Carter (Jr., RB), Alvin Williams (Sr., DL), Rickey Hall (Sr., DB), Jabari Taylor (Jr., DB), Colin Harrington (So., WR), Matt Watkins (Jr., OL).
Preview: It is a transition period for the Anclote Sharks, as longtime coach Matt Kingsley stepped down as the school's coach and former Gulf head coach Jason Messamore has since taken over. Messamore was the lead man for the Buccaneers for a couple seasons, with his most notable coming in the 2014 campaign when he guided Gulf to a 8-3 record and a postseason berth. The former East Lake assistant will have a tough task ahead of him in turning around an Anclote program that won just two games last season, which those wins came against Gulf and Cypress Creek, respectively. Anclote will be a part of a newly constructed Class 5A, District 11 and the new division includes Gulf, River Ridge, Tarpon Springs, Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills. The Sharks’ defense will be their strength, as Messamore has a solid secondary led by senior Rickey Hall and junior Jabari Taylor. Junior running back Michael Carter should see the bulk of the carries this fall.
