TRINITY -- The Mustangs were able to wrap winning their fourth straight district championship when they defeated Land O’ Lakes 42-17 this past Friday night for the Class 6A, District 6 crown. With the victory, Mitchell locks themselves into the Class 6A postseason and will host a playoff game for the fourth straight year.
In a season that looked to be one of potentially taking a step back after losing key stars like running back Mychael Hamilton and quarterback Jakob Mattos to graduation, the Mustangs were able to remain the district’s best. Players like Kymmani King, Tyler Williams, Dominic Marino and Nick Ferrini have been the mainstays that have kept Mitchell on top.
King made the transition from playing defense full time to a two-way player for Mitchell this season. Paired with Williams, the two have made up arguably the county’s top backfield pairing in running the football. Marino and Ferrini, who play defensive end and linebacker, have kept the Mustangs’ defense at the top as the county’s best unit.
Mitchell will close out the regular season when they face Tarpon Springs in a non-district matchup.
