With all fall sports seasons now concluded, we shift over to the winter where basketball and soccer take center stage. We take a look teams to watch for in girls basketball along the west side heading into this 2018-2019 campaign.

River Ridge at it again

Coming off a 24-6 season, the Royal Knights have zero plans of taking any steps backwards under Joeyns Dearsman, who is in her second year back with the program. River Ridge and Fivay had a couple epic battles within district play last season and both neighboring clubs figure to go head-to-head when it comes down to district matchups. The Royal Knights are already 2-0 in preseason action and open up the season versus Zephyrhills.

Don’t overlook Fivay this season

Was anybody really going to overlook Fivay after the kind of season they had last year? Possibly because of the loss of guard India Lewis May have something to do with that. Lewis was the county’s top overall players and the Falcons will sorely miss her leadership on the court. Fivay coach Scott Love should be able to keep the Falcons competitive despite losing Lewis and figure to be in the talk when districts roll around.

Sunlake has the tools to get back to playoffs

The Seahawks have the formula and are going to use it. Sunlake has reached the postseason the last couple of years and are poised to be a contender once again within Class 7A, District 8. Competing against the likes of Spring Hill Springstead, Land O’ Lakes and Mitchell, Sunlake returns as the favorite to win the district.
