Past the midway point of the prep softball regular season, and with districts in the state just a couple weeks away, several clubs in Pasco County have remained consistent when it comes to state ranked polls.
Miracle Sports releases a weekly state prep softball poll and the four programs that have stayed among the top 10 is Sunlake, Land O’ Lakes, River Ridge and Academy at the Lakes. These four teams have played at an exceptionally high level all season long and are favorites to win their respective districts.
In Class 7A, District 10, Sunlake is 13-2 on the season and is undefeated playing within the district with a record of 7-0. Seahawks manager Nelson Garcia’s bunch has only a couple more tough games on the slate, with rival Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel still on tap. Senior Alexis Duff leads the club with 21 runs batted in. Sunlake is currently ranked No. 9 in Class 7A.
Sunlake’s rival, Land O’ Lakes, has been a consistent team all season long and as evident of its 18-2 record. The Gators hold Pasco County’s best record and have been equally tough to play when it comes to within the district. Land O’ Lakes, the defending Class 6A state champions, is 9-1 playing teams from Class 6A, District 7. Land O’ Lakes is currently ranked No. 9 in Class 6A.
Not far behind the Gators is River Ridge, whom holds a record of 15-5 and surprised everyone when they upset Land O’ Lakes early in the regular season. The Royal Knights have been a very up and down team all season long and a recent loss to Wesley Chapel attests to that. River Ridge is currently ranked No. 5 in Class 6A.
The last team that’s ranked amongst the state elite is Academy at the Lakes, which won the Class 2A state championship last spring. The Wildcats haven’t looked much like the team that won it all last year, as a recent loss to rival Canterbury has the Wildcats reeling a bit heading into districts. Academy at the Lakes is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A.
