WESLEY CHAPEL – Scores were hard to come by Friday night at Wiregrass Ranch and Clearwater Central Catholic’s Lenwood Sapp got his when it counted most.

Stuck in a 7-7 tie on the road, the sophomore running back scored his first touchdown of the young season with just 14.6 seconds to go, sealing CCC’s first win of the year.

The 2-yard run capped a 10-play, game-winning drive that started at the Wiregrass Ranch 30 after CCC’s stingy defense forced its fourth turnover on downs of the night. Sapp rushes accounted for seven of those 10 plays and 32 of 70 yards gained.

Marking the biggest play of the drive, however, was a 21-yard catch-and-run from Marauders quarterback Anthony Colandrea to Jarquez Green. The senior receiver hauled in a quick slant and did the rest by carrying multiple Bulls defenders to the Wiregrass Ranch 24.

All four of Colandrea’s second-half completions, totaling 67 yards, were caught by Green.

Both teams’ defenses came to play Friday and CCC’s didn’t allow a point. Wiregrass Ranch’s lone score came on a pick-6 midway through the third quarter by senior Larry Gibbs that tied the game at 7-7.

The Bulls did have multiple scoring opportunities but could not find the plays that would result in six points. Two of their turnovers on downs came deep inside CCC territory and another promising drive ended with a Nate Johnson interception in the end zone.

Prior to Sapp’s game-winning rush, Wiregrass Ranch was the team in position to take control. Tied 7-7 late in the fourth, the Bulls got to the Marauders 28-yard line on a second-down, 7-yard, Rocco Becht-to-Broden Guirl completion. But the CCC defense was done bending. A Kenneth Walker run was stuffed at the line and the ensuing designed QB run by Becht resulted in a loss of two yards and turnover on downs.

In addition to his third-quarter interception, Johnson put CCC on the board first early in the second quarter. The sophomore got behind the Bulls secondary and Colandrea hit him for a 74-yard touchdown. That play also gave the Marauders their first points of the season after falling 25-0 at Tampa Catholic last week.

Wiregrass Ranch’s record goes to 1-1. The Bulls hammered St. Petersburg on the road last week, 50-10.

The Bulls get back in the buses next week when they travel to West Pasco to face River Ridge (2-0).

CCC will play its home opener next week against Sebring (1-0).
