COUGARS 50 PIRATES 33

CLEARWATER – Boca Ciega and Countryside kept the scoreboard operator busy early and often Friday night.

With all the offense and big special teams plays, it ended up being the Cougars’ second-half defense that keyed a 50-33 victory.

The Pirates (0-2) jumped out to a 27-14 lead after the first quarter and went into the locker room at halftime up 33-24. But Bogie’s 28-yard touchdown pass from Taffrey Peterman to Evan Graham ended up being the visitor’s last score of the night.

Countryside’s defensive front, powered by the likes of tackle Taurus Dorsey and end Mekhi Turner, took over the trenches and control of the game. The Cougars defense posted six sacks (three by Turner) a week after recording 10 against Osceola.

Countryside (2-0) wasted little time to get back on top out of the break. The defense forced a three-and-out on Boca Ciega’s opening possession and took over at the Pirates 18-yard line because of a bad punt snap. One play later, Cougars quarterback Chirs Cooper hit Cardrece Mobley for diving touchdown in the right side of the end zone to narrow the deficit to 33-31.

Countryside took the lead for good on its next possession with Davis Hughes’ booming 40-yard field goal that appeared to be money from about 50.

Hughes pounded through two other field goals from 39 and 28 yards.

The teams combined for 910 total yards, with 612 coming in the first half.

Cooper threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns and ran in two more. The senior quarterback spread his 12 completions out, hitting Mobley three times for 73 yards and two scores, Reece Metheney four times for 80 yards, Tony Michael four times for 22 yards and Julian Cooney once for a 55-yard score.

Cooney’s touchdown was one for the highlight reel. Trailing 14-7 late in the first quarter, Cooper went to Turner and the ball bounced off his hands and hit Cooney in stride.

Boca Ciega needed about 10 minutes of game time to record its initial first down, yet already had 14 points thanks to special teams. Alfonso Franklin answered C-Side’s first touchdown with a 93-yard kick return and the Cougars’ next possession ended with a blocked punt and Winston Brown taking it to the house.

The Pirates rushed for 235 yards, led by Chris Phillips (16 for 177) and Franklin (11 for 67). Peterman went 12 of 24 for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Bogie’s largest lead came at 27-14 in the first quarter when Peterman lofted a perfectly placed 27-yard touchdown pass into the hands of Jason Washington.

Countryside now begins gearing up for its big rivalry stretch. The Cougars head to Clearwater (1-1) next week and East Lake (1-1) on Sept. 28.

Boca Ciega opened the year with road dates against Lakewood and C-Side, and the Pirates get another tough challenge during their home opener next week against St. Petersburg (2-0).
