CLEARWATER – Calvary Christian’s drive to the Class 3A state final four hit a road block Tuesday night.

The Warriors entered their Class 3A Region 2 Final as the bracket’s top seed and touting a 26-2 overall record. The region’s No. 2 seed Sarasota Cardinal Mooney, last year’s Class 5A state runner-up, came to play.

The visiting Cougars dictated the pace of Tuesday night’s match from the start and swept their way to the state semifinals. The 25-22, 25-19, 25-10 win sets up a state semifinal match with Ocala Trinity Catholic, the school that beat Cardinal Mooney in last year’s Class 5A state championship.

Calvary Christian hung tight the first two sets but never led by more than one point at any time in the match. The Cougars went on an early 10-0 run in the third and final set to go ahead 13-2 and Calvary could not respond.

Leading Cardinal Mooney to victory was junior Mary Page, with 13 kills and 18 digs. Skye Ekes had eight kills and Sophia Hritz had seven kills. Anna Klemeyer had six kills and six blocks.

Cardinal Mooney will go to Trinity Catholic for Saturday’s state semifinal. The other semifinal will be between Miami Westminster and Palm Beach Gardens Benjamin.
