TARPON SPRINGS – A roadway confrontation Saturday involving a motorist and a group of motorcyclists is being investigated after the driver of the car shot one of the bikers, claiming self-defense.

The shooting, which resulted in non-fatal injuries, occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., Saturday, at the intersection of E. Klosterman Road and S. Disston Avenue.

Preceding the shooting was an interaction between the as-of-yet unidentified driver of a black 2011 Mercedes Benz S-Class sedan and 10-15 motorcyclists. All vehicles were traveling south on U.S. Highway 19 from the area of Beckett Way.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department responded to the scene at Klosterman and Disston after the driver of the Mercedes Benz called 911, indicating he had discharged his firearm at a motorcyclist in self-defense. The driver, who had his 9-year-old son in the car, reported that the motorcyclists caused damage by repeatedly striking his vehicle and then impeded his ability to leave the area.

The injured motorcyclist was reported to be 17 years old. He was shot in the bicep and transported himself to the Medical Center of Trinity. After receiving treatment, he was discharged during the early morning hours of Sunday.

All the other motorcyclists had left the area prior to police arrival and the shooting remains under investigation by the Tarpon Springs Police Department. No arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon.

Anyone who witnessed the group of motorcyclists traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 19 or has information related to the shooting is asked to contact Detective Lemmon with the Tarpon Springs Police Department at 727-938-2849 ext. 1636.
