SPRING HILL -- The driver of a runaway vehicle and five patrons were seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when a 2007 Saturn careened off Spring Hill Drive and ended up smashing into a Beef 'O' Brady's restaurant just west of the Suncoast Parkway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Saturn Ion was headed eastbound on Spring Hill Drive around 1:40 p.m. Feb. 5 when the driver, Barbara Markowski, 65, of Spring Hill, lost control of the car. The car passed over the median and crossed the westbound lanes of Spring Hill Drive and then traveled off the road, troopers said.

The car then drove through a flower bed and struck a Ford F-150 pickup that was towing a trailer and trying to leave the parking lot at 14387 Spring Hill Drive. Neither the driver of the pickup nor two passengers were injured in the collision, according to an update from the FHP.

After bouncing off the pickup, the Saturn continued through the parking lot and struck a parked and unoccupied 2015 Hyundai Elantra and then "completely entered" the Beef 'O' Brady's. It struck five people who were only identified as "adult patrons" of the restaurant.

The five diners and the driver were all taken to area hospitals with what the Highway Patrol called serious injuries. The age of the diners ranged from 65 to 86, troopers said.

The crash is under investigation, according to Sgt. Phil Gaskins,  FHP Troop C public affairs officer.
