NEW PORT RICHEY — A memorial walk will be held for the second year in a row, and Pasco residents are encouraged to start signing up.

The 2019 Hospice Stroll will be held Feb. 2 at Sims Park. This is the second annual memorial walk held by Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care.

In the inaugural stroll that was held on Jan. 27 last year, over 75 people walked to honor and celebrate their loved ones that passed away under hospice care and raised nearly $14,000 for patient care and bereavement services.

The walk was inspired by the Hike for Hospice, which the nonprofit corporation began in 2007. Joan Hook, a Gulfside Hospice board member of over 20 years, brought up the idea to bring back a fundraiser walk.

Linda Ward, Gulfside president and CEO, has enjoyed watching the renewal of the walking fundraiser.

“It’s heartwarming to see the teams created by families who have been touched by hospice come together to walk in their loved one’s memory and raise money for Gulfside,” said Ward. “It’s a great tradition we have had since the original Hike for Hospice, and the walk has now transformed into this memorial walk known as the Hospice Legacy Stroll.”

Along the walk, there will be vendors and interactive stations. Kirsty Churchill, Gulfside’s community relations manager, hopes to make the activity stops “bigger and better this year.”

Leesa Fryer, fundraising events coordinator, wants people to feel peaceful during the event while they remember the people in their lives that have passed away.

The park is a beautiful setting. It’s a serene and relaxed stroll, Fryer said. People can reflect on their loved ones with that moment of silence.

On top of improved interactive stations, more participants are key to a successful legacy stroll.

We want teams that work together, Fryer said. “It’s healthy competition.”

A remembrance ceremony will start the event and awards will be given out to the top fundraising teams.

Registration is underway, and teams can sign up at www.HospiceLegacyStroll.org. They can also build a fundraising website for people to donate to. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for students. Participants who register by Jan. 15 will receive an event t-shirt.

Sponsorships and vendor opportunities are available. Contact Fryer at 727-845-5707 or leesa.fryer@ghppc.org.
