BROOKSVILLE — A man’s body was found inside a house on Barclay Avenue after a fire that broke out in the residence Tuesday night was extinguished.

Hernando Fire Rescue said Wednesday morning its firefighters responded to reports of a fire at 6444 Barclay Ave. and found the one-story house ablaze. Residence of the surrounding area had reported seeing flames coming from the roof of the house.

The first Hernando Fire Rescue unit arrived at the Barclay Avenue address, south of Cortez Boulevard and west of the Suncoast Parkway, four minutes later. People on the scene told firefighters there might be someone inside the residence.

According to Fire Rescue, the house was fully ablaze and part of its roof collapsed before firefighters were able to initiate an attack on the fire. They determined it would initially be unsafe to try to enter the house and launched a defensive attack and eventually extinguished the fire.

Once they were able to go inside the house, the firefighters found a man’s body. Fire Rescue did not initially identify the victim, pending notification of next of kin.

The Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives Investigation has been called in to determine the cause of the fatal house fire, Hernando Fire Rescue said.

In its release on the incident, Fire Rescue urged people to ensure their smoke detectors are in working order.
