WEEKI WACHEE — A rear-end crash on Commercial way north of Cortez Boulevard has left the driver of a pickup truck that failed to stop for a school bus dead.
As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol had not made public the name of the driver of the 2014 Ford F150 pickup involved in the crash, pending notification of next of kin.
The school bus that the pickup rear ended was traveling northbound on Commercial Way carrying 48 students to the Winding Waters K-8 School. Six of the students on the bus were taken to area hospitals for treatment of what the Highway Patrol said were minor injuries.
The crash took place at 8:40 a.m. on Jan. 15 as the bus was stopped at the intersection of Commercial Way and Bourassa Boulevard to allow a pedestrian to cross Bourassa Boulevard. The bus was waiting to turn right unto Bourassa Boulevard.
The pickup did not stop and slammed into the back of the bus, propelling both vehicles forward, onto Bourassa Boulevard.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the crash scene, troopers said. The pickup driver was wearing a seat belt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the Highway Patrol.
