Hispanic festival to be held Saturday in Ybor City

YBOR CITY — Tampa Hispanic Heritage’s official kick-off will be at CENTRO Tampa’s eighth annual Festival del SABOR, a celebration of food, music and art. The event, set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept 14, at Centennial Park also includes a recipe contest and cook-off to find who makes the Tampa Bay area’s best Arroz con Pollo (rice with chicken). The 2013 Tampa Hispanic Heritage Cultural Ambassador also will be selected during the festival, which is held at the site of the Ybor City Saturday market, 1901 N 19th St. The event will mark the 34th anniversary of the nonprofit group, whose objective is to preserve and promote Hispanic culture within Tampa Bay.
At the festival, amateur cooks can participate and win up to $750 in prizes. Prizes will be awarded for Best Recipe and Most Creative Recipe. A children’s area is planned with performances by local talent. While Saturday is the official kickoff, two other events precede it. The winning poster in a poster contest will be unveiled at a free program from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 10 at the Tampa Museum of Art, 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza. Eat at Joes from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at Joe Chillura Courthouse Square will have a Hispanic flavor with a performance by Grace Badillo, Simona Beltram and Alferdo Ricardo. Attendees can bring a bag lunch or buy a box lunch from a local restaurant. The courthouse square park is downtown on East Madison Street at Kennedy Boulevard. As part of the celebration, Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. annually selects a Hispanic man and Hispanic woman for their life-time achievements. They will be honored at a formal gala at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Hilton Tampa Downtown, 211 N. Tampa St. Tickets are $75 each or $800 for a table for eight.
