BROOKSVILLE — Hernando County’s diverse natural beauty is often a great resource for promotion of charitable events. Runners in particular are inspired to participate in challenging courses that dub as fundraisers for important community issues.

The Arc Nature Coast will benefit from those eager to try their skill on what is considered one of the most challenging courses. On May 25, the Spring Lake Memorial Classic, a two mile fun run and 5K and 10K runs, will take place along naturally scenic backdrops with challenging hills and dips.

All proceeds will benefit Arc Nature Coast.

The Arc Nature Coast is an affiliation of the Arc of the United States, a national organization founded in 1950. The Arc of the United States has grown to include more than 140,000 members with more than 700 state and local chapters nationwide. It advocates for and serves those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

The Arc Nature Coast’s mission is to “provide individually tailored quality supports and advocacy for persons with disabilities and their families to promote their self-determination and inclusion in community life.” It was created in 1972 and operates its main campus at 5283 Neff Lake and educational and employment facility at 6495 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

The Spring Lake Memorial Classic encompasses a setting of scenic beauty in eastern Hernando County. The three courses span shaded tree-draped roads dotted with challenging hills!

“Make sure that the sound of your pounding heart and deep breathing don't distract you from observing the wonderful surroundings along the course,” reads the Facebook event page. “The area is home to a variety of native plants and wildlife such as majestic oaks, magnolias, hickory and cedar trees, red hawks, bald eagles, wild turkeys, pileated woodpeckers, bob cats, foxes, coyotes and white-tail deer - just to name a few.... So, while doing this run be sure to keep your head high, breath deep and keep your eyes peeled - it truly is a treat for the senses!”

Awards will be given in the 5K and 10K for first, second and third in different age brackets. The two mile fun run participants will receive a walking medal.

Proceeds from the Spring Lake Memorial Classic will benefit services for local individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities.

The Spring Lake Memorial Classic will begin at the Arc Nature Coast main campus, 5283 Neff Lake Road. Start times are 7:15 a.m. for the 10K, the Neff Lake Monster; 7:45 a.m. for the 5K, Florida’s Toughest 5K; and 8 a.m. for the 2 Mile Walk-Run, the Perfect Stroll.
