Ruthie Nelson, vocal music director at Hillsborough Community College, will direct new Young Voices, a West Pasco youth chorus that starts Sept. 12.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Singers are wanted for a fledgling youth chorus led by an experienced vocal director that starts Sept. 12.

Fourth- and fifth-graders who want to be a better singer, perform for the community or make beautiful music with friends while having fun are encouraged to sign up, Ruthie Nelson, director of the Young Voices choral group, wrote in a press release.

Registration and an information session for Young Voices is scheduled for 5-6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at First United Methodist Church of New Port Richey, 5901 Indiana Ave.

Rehearsals will be held 5-6:15 p.m. every Wednesday.

The cost is $20 per year.

Nelson has directed the Tampa Bay Children’s Chorus and the Ocala Young Singers and was the 2018 clinician for the Pasco County Elementary School Chorus.

A soprano, Nelson was the winner of the St. Petersburg Opera’s 2011 “Opera Idol” competition and has performed in sacred orchestral works by composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Saint-Saëns and Faure.

She holds her master’s degree in music from the University of South Florida and is director of choral activities at Hillsborough Community College Ybor City Campus and music director of First United Methodist Church of New Port Richey.
