TARPON SPRINGS – Pasco County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a Clearwater man Wednesday afternoon for his involvement in a Tarpon Springs carjacking, reports state.

According to a Tarpon Springs Police Department media alert, the crime occurred at about 2:08 p.m., Dec. 30, near the 600 block of Athens Street.

A 2011 Lexus was parked on Athens Street and the driver is said to have left the vehicle to go to a business while leaving his vehicle running with his spouse inside. The spouse was seated in the front passenger seat when the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Lorenzo B. Butler Jr., of Clearwater, opened the unlocked driver’s side door and entered. A confrontation between Butler and the spouse ensued, reports state. The spouse advised Tarpon Springs Police officers she opened the passenger door and began to yell for help when Butler used his foot to kick her out of the vehicle.

The spouse reported sustaining minor injuries after being forced out of the vehicle.

Butler then fled the scene in the stolen Lexus. TSPD officers issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) to law enforcement agencies throughout Pasco and Pinellas County for Butler and the vehicle.

Approximately 20-25 minutes after the carjacking was reported, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office units located the vehicle being driven north on U.S. Highway 19 in Hudson, near the area of Country Club Drive. Deputies pulled over the Lexus and Butler was taken into custody without incident.
