DADE CITY – A 36-year-old Inverness man was killed when a two-car accident resulted in his SUV catching fire the night of Dec. 18.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol and Pasco County Fire Rescue, the victim was traveling north on U.S. Highway 98 near the intersection with Janmar Road. Another vehicle, a pickup driven by a 53-year-old Lakeland man, was headed south on U.S. 98. For reasons unknown to investigators, the SUV entered the path of the truck, causing a head-on collision.

The impact caused the SUV to become engulfed in flames, the FHP report states. The 36-year-old driver of the SUV suffered fatal injuries from the collision and fire.

The 53-year-old driver of the truck reported minor injuries, but his 22-year-old female passenger, also from Lakeland, was transported to an area hospital and is listed in serious condition.
